The Uyghurs are the largest minority ethnic group in China's north-western province of Xinjiang China has been accused of committing crimes against humanity and possibly genocide against the Uyghur population and other mostly-Muslim ethnic groups in the north-western region of Xinjiang. Human rights groups believe China has detained more than one million Uyghurs against their will over the past few years in a large network of what the state calls "re-education camps", and sentenced hundreds of thousands to prison terms. There were a number of long-term and short-term reasons to explain why the USA became involved in Vietnam in the late 1950s. Reason one - Vietnamese independence Before World War Two Vietnam had been part of the French Empire. During World War Two it had been invaded by Japan. Ho Chi Minh was the leader of the Vietminh, a resistance army which fought for Vietnamese independence. After World War Two Ho Chi Minh captured Hanoi in 1945 and declared Vietnam independent. South China Sea Dispute Key Points About China’s Claim: China lays claim to nearly all of the South China Sea,  including the Paracel Islands. However, Taiwan, Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam also claim parts of the region,  believed to hold valuable oil and gas deposits.
